The following are oil paintings I did for the Paradigm Motion Picture Company (2012). The portrait is of a young man, James Richardson, who was a bagpipe player in World War I and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery as he played the pipes, leading his battalion into battle. You can learn more about his truly amazing and inspiring story here. Or visit their facebook page here.
Historical accuracy played a huge part in painting these pieces... I had to make sure that the buttons, pins, hats, uniform, etc. were all accurate to James Richardson's specific battalion.
It was also a challenge to paint James due to the old age of the few pictures that were actually taken of him.
I thoroughly enjoyed doing these paintings!
This painting I did depicts James Richardson playing the bagpipes during one of the battles, from the viewpoint of the Germans.
